Do you know the bimetal material? A bimetal is a composite of two or more metals materials, because of the different thermal expansion coefficients of each component layer, when the temperature changes, the deformation of the active layer is greater than the deformation of the passive layer, so that the whole bimetal is bent toward the side of the passive layer. The curvature of this composite material changes to cause deformation. The following is a description of bimetallic materials.

Bimetal material

The working principle of thermal overload protection of circuit breakers is to take advantage of the thermal bending characteristics of bimetals. Two or more layers of bimetals with different thermal expansion coefficients will bend when heated. A piece of hot bimetal is bent into an arch shape when heated, and a narrow hot bimetal is curved into a curved shape when heated, and the bimetal is deflected by heat and has various directions of motion and rotation. Metal sheets can have a variety of shapes.

Bimetal Application

Bimetals are widely used in relays, switches, controllers, etc. A starter for fluorescent lamps is a good example. In addition, a bimetal can be used to make a thermometer that can measure higher temperatures.

Bimetal design

The bimetal is divided into high-sensitivity, general-purpose, high-temperature, low-temperature, resistive, corrosion-resistant and special types. The material properties are various. It’s important to select a suitable bimetal lugs and connectors.

When designing and selecting bimetals, various parameters such as operating temperature, resistance, corrosion resistance, marking, product dimensional tolerance, and bimetal working stability are required to meet the design requirements in order to obtain a reliable product.

The bimetal has a linear operating temperature and a maximum operating temperature. The operating temperature rises and the bimetal deflection has a typical linear relationship. For example, a bimetal with a linear temperature of -20 to 200℃, a curve of 200℃ or higher, a linear relationship is again presented. The size of the bimetal resistor directly determines the heating of the bimetal and also affects the operating characteristics of the product. As the temperature increases, the resistance increases.

The corrosion resistance of bimetals needs to be considered according to different environments, especially for industrial environments with high pollution levels. For certain environments, such as high temperature and high humidity or industrial environments with corrosive gases, the factory should use more corrosion resistant bimetals.

Please note that in the application of bimetal, the bimetal deflection will not be achieved, and the deflection parameters claimed by the manufacturer will not be achieved. After the bimetal section is split, it is found that the bimetal composite is not in place. The bonding between the layers of the metal is not tight, and there are gaps in a plurality of positions, and the bimetal pieces with good working properties are densely bonded and have no defects.

In the manufacturing process of hot bimetal components, please ensuring the consistency stability, and quality control should be strictly carried out in accordance with the process specifications during the manufacturing and assembly process. We need to choose high quality products and qualified manufacturers.
